Why your province changes your insurance

Business insurance in Canada is sold by private insurers, but much of what surrounds it is set by each province. Your province commonly shapes:

  • Workers’ compensation, which is run by a provincial board and decides whether you have to register and pay premiums for your workers
  • Who licenses insurers, agents and brokers, and where you can go if a complaint isn’t resolved
  • Local risks, such as flooding, wildfire, hail or ice storms, that affect what a property policy covers and what it costs
